From ‘Straw’ to Strength: How One Film Lit the Fire Behind the BlackGuard Foundation
Sometimes it takes just one moment — a scene, a sentence, a stare — to awaken the purpose buried beneath the pain.
I recently watched the movie Straw, and to be honest, I didn’t expect it to shake me the way it did. The film wasn’t filled with explosive drama or flashy effects, but what it did have was honesty — raw, unsettling, and painfully familiar honesty.
It told the story of a woman broken not by bullets or bombs, but by bureaucracy. A woman silenced not by violence, but by a system built to quietly discard people when they’re no longer “useful.” A system of prejudice without information! A broken system! Upheld and policed by our own people also.
I saw her quiet suffering, her unraveling, and I saw me. I saw colleagues. I saw countless disenfranchised Black professionals whose dignity has been stripped under the guise of restructuring, downsizing, or “policy" or, just because they are black!
And in that moment, it all clicked.
I’ve lived it. I walked away from a job of almost 17 years for what I believed was a fresh opportunity — a new chapter. Instead, I was ambushed with betrayal, wrongful termination, and systemic silencing. I wasn’t the only one.
Many of us — especially Black professionals — were strategically discarded, isolated, and forced into silence. No justice. No support. Just silence and shame.
But not anymore.
That night, after watching Straw, I stopped asking why me? and started asking what now?
The answer was clear: The BlackGuard Foundation.
BlackGuard isn’t just a name.
It’s a stand. It’s a shield. It’s a sword for every worker who has been wrongfully terminated, silenced, or gaslit by systems designed to protect profits over people.
It’s our refusal to stay quiet any longer. It’s our way of saying: We see you. We believe you. And we will fight with you.
This foundation will offer legal support, mental health resources, career guidance, and most importantly — community. We’re building something bigger than a nonprofit. We’re building a movement.
So if you’ve been told to “just move on,” if you’ve been made to feel like your experience didn’t matter, if you’ve been left out in the cold while they closed the door behind you — know this: We’re opening a new one.
You are not alone.
You are not disposable.
And your fight is our mission.
